About the Program

Our certificate programs are for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurses and all persons involved in compounding. We offer comprehensive practice-based continuing education courses designed to provide both classroom and hands-on training. Participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary to compound sterile preparations safely and effectively. The courses provide practical experience that will assist the participant in evaluating their current sterile compounding practice and implementing changes necessary to become compliant with USP standards.

About the Center

The Center for Compounding Practice and Research (CCPR) at VCU School of Pharmacy has an interactive, learner-centered instructional lab and a state-of-the-art cleanroom for aseptic processing. Our sterile compounding facility designed according to USP <797> standards allows participants to demonstrate hands-on simulation using current technology. The lab can accommodate 24 participants.

USP Chapter <797> Changes are Coming on Nov. 1, 2023

Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Processing

The long-anticipated revised USP Chapter <797> was published on Nov. 1, 2022. It becomes official on Nov. 1, 2023.
Participants will be taught processing and skills required of all sterile preparation compounders based on current regulations. This program promotes best practices using situations most likely to be experienced in a sterile compounding environment (two days). Our course provides comprehensive instruction based on the most recent published USP <797> standards for the successful preparation of compounded sterile preparations. The course is designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other pharmacy personnel, including designated persons who teach, train or supervise personnel preparing CSPs.

USP Chapter <800> Are You Ready?

Proper Handling of Hazardous Drugs

Hazardous drugs (HDs) require safe and responsible handling for you and your team, whether medical, nursing or pharmacy. This program reviews current and proposed regulations and recommends best practices concerning all aspects of handling HDs (one day). Our practice-based format allows for evaluation of your existing sterile compounding practices and leads to identification of areas needing modifications to ensure compliance with USP <800> standards.
